The Science is Out - Defending Parents Rights to Informed Choice
I am reluctant to write about these things because we live in an age where reason has lost it’s foothold. But as I scroll down my feed, I am horrified by the vitriol of abuse I see levelled at and by otherwise reasonable people. Young mothers call me to ask, “what should I do ?” There is so much pressure. I say “lay low, put your head down, avoid eye contact and keep your kids home, it will pass.” You would think we were talking about heinous crimes not childhood infections.
The accusations are as wild as they are stupid, 'every time a baby dies of the Measles, it’s your fault’ and ‘anti-vaxers should ALL be taken to an island and killed’. On a vaccine education discussion forum, one woman recently asked if it was discrimination for her company to force her to wear a large pin stating she had declined the flue shot. Nurses are routinely bullied into taking the shot even though they know it contains thimerosal and parents are persecuted and excluded from community and family events for their decision to question or delay vaccinations.
Scientists we trusted just minutes ago, are sent to the gallows and made an example of for daring to even raise the possibility that the risks may not outweigh the benefits of the holy vaccine and that some of the ingredients or methodologies are worthy of honest scientific investigation. Merck and the CDC - Centre of Disease Control, the gods of Science and Medicine, dare never be challenged, for to do so is punishable by certain death.
I understand. Immunocompromised babies and the elderly, do not fair well in the face of infection, and why put them at risk when it’s so easy to ‘just get the shot’. It’s an emotive discussion that raises fear, anger and judgement on both sides and confusion to those in the middle. Parents of vaccine damaged children and those who support them receive most of the abuse and little empathy from those convinced that by now the whole issue of childhood epidemics would be finished were it not for these ignorant and stupid ‘baby killer’ parents who care less about ‘the herd’ than they do about their own child. And why shouldn’t they ?
Furthermore, they are repeatedly reminded that online information is fake, and that they have been brainwashed by radical self gratifying, money-hungry, crazy ex-scientists, conspiracy theorists and doctors who have, for no good reason whatsoever suddenly abandoned their previously held respectable and lucrative positions in the medical and science world, just to make trouble.
No stranger to trouble, one such scientist, Dr. Judy Milkovits, was employed early on in her career as a molecular biologist and virologist by then head of the Leukocyte Biology Section at the National Cancer Institute, Fank Ruscetti. When strongly advised by the companies director not to employ her because she was a ‘troublemaker who asked too many questions’, a horrified Ruscetti replied “she’s a scientist…it’s her job to ask questions !”
In 2009, Judy Mikovits and her team found evidence of a retrovirus in 67 percent of Chronic Fatigue patients and “in a significant number of Autistic samples”. On a TV show called Nevada Newsmakers, shortly after an article was published in the respected journal Science, linking a new human retrovirus to Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Milkovits said, “This might explain why vaccines lead to Autism in some children because these viruses live and divide and grow in the lymphocytes, the immune response cells, the B and T cells. So when you give a vaccine, you send your B and T cells in your immune cells into overdrive. That’s it’s job. Well if you’re harbouring one virus, and you replicate it a whole bunch, you’ve now broken the balance between the immune system and the virus. So you could have had the underlying virus and then amplified it with that vaccine and then set off the disease, such that your immune system could no longer control other infections and created an immune deficiency”.
Judy Mikovits had suggested that the the retrovirus she believed to be potentially responsible for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome or Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME), might be “linked to a number of neuro-immune diseases, including Autism.” And for this public claim, she was arrested without a warrant, thrown in jail and charged with stealing her own research. A molecular biologist and biochemist, author of fifty publications on the immunology of HIV, with twenty two years at the National Cancer Institute. Suddenly turned rogue. Why ?
Judy’s attorney David Follin was “disturbed…. by the legal manoeuvrings deployed against Mikovits…its seems like the field was stacked against Judy and it’s continued to be so. Any allegations she was convicted of a crime or that there was a successful judgement against her, is wrong,” Fallin said. “Judy is an amazing person. She’s probably one of the most brilliant people I’ve met. All Judy wants is fairness and I can’t understand how her profession can turn its back on such a talented individual who has so much to offer and who could help so many people.”
Judy’s research into Chronic Fatigue Syndrome or Myalgic Encephalomyelitis, had begun in 2009, but the disease had raised it’s head in the late seventies and early eighties, mystifying scientists and doctors alike and outdoing AIDS and HIV in queries by the mid eighties. Unable to make rhyme or reason (or profits) from the epidemic sweeping across the country, the CDC had mis-labeled Chronic Fatigue Syndrome a psychological disease born of ‘hysteria’, ‘yuppie burn-out’ and an ‘inability to handle stress’, dismissing it and betraying it’s millions of victims.
The former chief of Viral Diseases for the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention claimed the level of disability of many of these patients was similar to terminal AIDS patients and those in end stage of renal failure. When Milkovits found herself able to connect the dots between the work she had done on Cancer and AIDS research and Chronic Fatigue or ME, she refused to be silenced. The CDC stood to loose more than just face for it’s failure to contain the retrovirus she believed responsible for “the biggest epidemic in United Staes History”. But standing her ground against the politically and finacially protected godlike institution, the CDC, found Judy at the centre of nothing short of a witch-hunt from which she is only now re-emerging.
In her book entitled Plague, Milkovits cites how the CDC manipulates studies, as it did in the Thompson fraud, by using the wrong patients. In this case they removed patients with a medical or psychological condition that might be associated with fatigue, for a study on Chronic Fatigue. It is reasonable to be skeptical.
In 2004, Dr Thompson, a former senior vaccine safety scientist at the CDC, revealed a causal link between vaccines and Autistic Symptoms saying “There is biologic plausibility right now to say that thimerosal causes autism-like features." Thompson claimed that he and his co-authors were ordered by the heads of the CDC, to trash the data which showed a 250 percent increase in Autistic Symptoms in black male children who received the MMR before their third birthday. The study was then published without these data sets and is sited today in no less than 91 PubMed papers to prove their is no connection between the MMR vaccination and Autism. Trash the data ? Is this is how the science is settled?
Subsequently thimerosal has been removed from the MMR Vaccine but it remains an ingredient in the Flue vaccine which is routinely administered to pregnant women without disclosure of that fact.
But the worst offender of all has to be the anti-Christ himself Dr. Andrew Wakefield who is cited ad nauseam by anyone with half a science degree, for having his licence to practice medicine revoked by the UK licensing board and a paper he co-authored withdrawn from the Lancet, one of Britains oldest and and most prestigious peer reviewed medical journals. For personal financial reasons Wakefield did not continue with litigation following the licensing boards decisions, but his co-author, professor Walker Smith did. When the case was finally brought before a proper Judiciary for the first time, the judge ‘destroyed the General Medical Council’ for misrepresenting evidence, for incompetence and for bias. All charges were utterly dismissed and the judge recommended the paper be reinstated in the Lancet. Of course it never was.
The list of qualified doctors, scientists and health care practitioners who question vaccine safety grows daily with organisations such as Physicians For Informed Consent, The International Medical Council on Vaccination, and Nurses Against Mandatory Vaccines springing up to support them. In Australia, practitioners who are members of these groups risk online persecution and being reported to the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency. In the USA, nurses report frequent threat of job loss if they refuse to be vaccinated.
Dr Suzanne Humphrey, nephrologist (kidney specialist), and vaccine safety advocate, admits that she was once one of those doctors, who bullied patients to get vaccinated, before she began to observe multiple complications in her patients after routine vaccinations. What disturbed her most was the wall of denial and resistance she faced from her medical colleagues who knew nothing about vaccine ingredients or vaccine history and had read little on vaccine science. She says the vaccines are not effective enough to wipe out the Measles, and there will always be pockets of communities all over the world from where infections will spread.
So it’s no wonder that lay parents are skeptical. They have every right to be. More often than not, parents who chose to delay or refuse vaccination have watched their previously healthy children deteriorate before their very eyes, days after receiving their scheduled childhood shots. Few join the debate without first hand personal experience.
It takes enormous guts to stand up to the established norms, to nurses and headstrong doctors, and to the barrage of administrative blockades faced by parents exercising their rights and their responsibility to protect their children. Parents who decide to delay or not to vaccinate their children have every right to do so in the face of the controversy which surrounds vaccine safety. The science is not settled and the industries which claim it is, are not beyond reproach. We are less than 70 years into this revolutionary idea that we can stamp out disease and control nature. It’s an experiment in the making, and parent’s have every right to opt out and say, no, and to do so without being accused of committing biological terrorism.
